Nabekura Bayashi (music accompaniment to the festival)

Nabekura Bayashi (music accompaniment to the festival) ; music for festivals was started by being dedicated for Kashima-Okuri to pray for a rich harvest, good health, well-being of families, and driving away crop-eating insects. It is said that it has been played for more than 100 years.
People play the music with big and small drums, hand drums, flutes, and Japanese handbells. It was once deteriorated in the beginning of the Showa period, but people revived it post-war. Currently, an organization works hard to preserve traditional entertainments including Nabakura Bayashi.
In March 1989, Nabekura Bayashi was designated as an intangible folk cultural asset in Hiraga town, which is currently designated by Yokote city due to municipal mergers.
Nabakura Bayashi has 10 programs, such as Kobushi Bayashi and Sai-sai Bayashi. They are all played when people pull Dashi, boat shaped floats, and when they dedicate Mikoshi, portable shrine and Ebisu-Tawara; straw bags for rise. Now it is played mainly for Kashima Okuri, the festival for Asa-mai Hachiman shrine and the march of boat shaped floats to the shrine, and Ayame festival.
