The Huge Drums of Tsuzureko

It is said that this festival was started around 1262 by Joukakuin Genzui Doukyou who revived Tsuzureko Hachiman shrine. Joukakuin Genzui Doukyou is to be said that he first connected Yamabushi Kagura, dance performance by mountain priests, with Shinto ritual and then started a festival composed of a dance of drums, lion dance and a march into battle.
The festival itself is believed to be a ritual event to pray for rain, and a rich and eternal harvest. From the Edo period, the style of the festival had been changed. People are separated into two groups; Kami-machi and Shimo-machi and each group holds their own march into battle, Kami-machi is for the team Tokugawa, and Shimo-machi is for the team Toyotomi. However, it has been merged into one festival now. Every year on the 14th of July, Yoi-miya, and on the 15th Hon-miya is held. (a selected intangible property of folk culture registered by Japan)
