Cross-River Bonden (Izuyama shrine Bonden votive festival)

The official name for the Bonden crossing river is the “Izuyama shrine Bonden votive festival” which has been held every February 11th in the Hanadate district, Daisen city for more than 160 years. Since this Bontden festival is the only one of its kind to involve the crossing of a river for the dedication, it is known as the Cross-River Bonden. People march with Bonden from house to house while singing the Bonden song. On the way, they catch and tie up evils and hope for an end to the pandemic, peace and prosperity in the household, and a plentiful crop. Firstly, several groups transport the Bonden to the front of Ichi-no-Torii, the very first gate of all the ones in a shrine while engaging in playful jostling and pushing. Then, tens of Bonden are sent across the Omono river on riverboats and dedicated to Izuyama shrine honguu whose altitude is 207m. In 2021, people in the Hanadate district gathered their hope into one Bonden and representatives of each town went through Ichi-no-Torii to dedicate them to the Satomiya shrine. (This festival is designated as an intangible folk cultural property by Daisen city.)
