Kakeyo festival

Kakeyo festival, also called Tara, codfish festival, is a traditional event held on behalf of shipowners of Konoura fishing harbour in the hope of marine safety, good catches, and a good harvest. It is said that this festival has been held for more than 350 years. During the event, shipowners offer the biggest cod (which weighs more than 10kg) to Konourayama shrine. The word Kakeyo refers to the offerings that fishermen make to their guardian gods. People hang the massive cod with straw rope and march around the town from the fishing harbour led by Kinpo Kagura to offer them before the god at the shrine. Every year the shrine is full of participants and audiences, but in 2021, only the shrine ritual was carried out.
