Kamihinokinai paper balloon festival

仙北市西木町上桧木内で毎年2月10日に行われている年中行事。100年以上の歴史をもつと言われているが起源は定かではない。銅山の技術指導に訪れていた平賀源内が当地を訪れた際、熱気球の原理を伝えたとも言われる。武者絵や美人画を描いた巨大紙風船（大きなもので高さ12ｍ）が、「無病息災」「五穀豊穣」「家内安全」などの願いを託され、真冬の夜空に打ち上げられる。（仙北市指定無形民俗文化財）

The Kamihinokinai paper balloon festival is an annual event held on February 10th in Kamihinokinai, Nishiki town, Senboku city. While it is said that this festival has been held for more than 100 years, the origin is not known. One of the commonly held opinions is that Hiraga Gennai popularized the use of hot-air balloons when he visited a copper mine there as a technical advisor. Huge paper balloons (the tallest reaching over 12 meters high) are decorated with pictures of warriors and beautiful maidens. They are then launched into the winter night sky with hopes for good health and harvest and the well-being of families. (This event is designated as intangible folk cultural property by Senboku city.)
