Namahage Sedo festival

男鹿市北浦の真山神社で行われる『みちのく五大雪まつり』の一つで、神事「柴灯祭（さいとうさい）」と民俗行事「なまはげ」を組み合わせた冬の観光行事。毎年2月の第2金・土・日の3日間開催されている。神官から若者達が「神（しん）」の入った面を授かり「なまはげ」と化す「なまはげ入魂」の儀式、大晦日の民俗行事の再現、クライマックスでは闇の中から松明をかざした「なまはげ」が現れ、神社境内に焚き上げられた柴灯火のもと境内を勇壮かつ幻想的に練り歩く姿は見る者すべてを魅了する。

Namahage Sedo festival is held in Shinzan shrine in Kitaura, Oga city and is one of the five biggest snow festivals in Michinoku. The festival is carried out as a tourist attraction during the winter season and combines the Saito festival (a shrine ritual) and Namahage (a folk event). From the second Friday to Sunday of every February, the festival starts with the ceremony of Namahage consecration, where young people receive masks possessed by Shin, or gods of Shinto priests. Then they visit each house in the district as a service of exorcism, which is a New Year’s Eve folk event. At the climax of the event, Namahage emerges from the darkness with torches and march bravely and mystically within the shrine under Saito, a sacred brushwood bonfire. The march of this Namahage is a fascinating sight to behold.
